our story

Sunrise Ministries held its first worship service on October 19, 2003, at the Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville, MI, led by Rev. Dr. Dave Breen. At that time, 35 families were a part of this brand new congregation.

Two years later, in 2004, Pastor Dave had surgery for carcinoid cancer. Seminary student, Tim Breen, took a more active role in serving as a pastor at Sunrise. After he graduated from seminary in 2006, the congregation called on Pastor Tim to be the teaching pastor while Dave stayed on working with spiritual development and community care. Pastor Tim stepped away in 2010, accepting a call to the First Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa. Pastor Dave then again took over the role of teaching pastor. In August of 2011, offices were rented that allowed us to establish a Ministry Center and base for staff office, board meetings, and youth ministry.

On June 1, 2013, Pastor Dave was called to his Heavenly home. Bob Wollam was contracted by Sunrise in September of that year to lead the church through a time of mourning and transition. In February of 2014, Pastor Bob was called and accepted the position as lead pastor of Sunrise Ministries. After 13 years, in April of 2016, church services moved from the Pinnacle Center to Hudsonville Christian Middle School.

In May of 2017, Sunrise will close on its first permanent home, when we take ownership of the Friendship Chapel building in Jenison and move our operations there. Full church activities should be taking place at our new location by the end of the summer, but stay tuned for updates. We are so blessed to be making this move after years of utilizing shared rental space, and are grateful to our friends with Friendship Chapel for allowing us to inherit their former home. We could not be more excited about what God has planned for this next chapter of Sunrise Ministries.

From the days of the first services and the early visions to the present time of excitement and change, Sunrise has seen our fair share of challenges and uncertainty, but also an abundance of blessing and hope. And throughout it all, Sunrise has held onto our vision of reaching out to the lost, the lonely, the bruised, and the broken, transforming our families, our community, and our world through God's indescribable grace and enending love.

OUR MISSION & VISION

Sunrise Ministries exists to Transform the World with God’s Grace and Love

God created the world as good and intended it to live in peace. Sin broke into the world and disrupted peace. Jesus is God’s answer to sin. He came announcing that the Kingdom of God is at hand and through his life, death and resurrection he overcame sin. Humanity did not deserve this, rather God sent Jesus as a sacrifice because he loves us. This is what we call grace. This grace and love began a course of God changing everything. He overcame sin and began restoring peace back into the world.

While complete peace won’t happen until Jesus returns, we believe that God calls us as a church to participate in His mission of transforming the world for better. Therefore, we tell the good news of Jesus to our community, care for those in need, restore relationships with authentic community and live in harmony with our creator and creation.

We believe that an entire church living and proclaiming God’s grace and love has tremendous power to bring change. His grace and love is that powerful. We believe that God working through us will change the world around us. In short, we believe we are called to transform the world with God’s grace and love.

At Sunrise we live out our mission through a set of practices that are influenced by our pillars.

OUR CORE BELIEFS

We Believe: In The Bible

The Bible is the story of God and God’s people. It tells God’s plan for humanity and in all ways leads us to truth. The Bible was written by people, influenced by their culture, style and language but is guided by God’s Spirit and is authoritative, inspired, and useful for teaching, correcting, and wisdom.

We Believe: In One God

There is one God that speaks the entire universe into existence. God is eternal in nature without beginning or end. God is love. God is at work reconciling everything on earth to the way it God intended it to be. God reveals himself through a communal relationship of oneness displayed in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We Believe: In Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ came proclaiming a new arrival of the Kingdom of God. A reality marked by love and grace. Through his sinless life, voluntary death, and resurrection, Jesus defeated sin and death inaugurating a new creation that offers all people eternal life now. Jesus is the only way to access the free gift of grace and reconciliation with God.

We Believe: In The Holy Spirit

God sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in us, teach us truth, comfort, guide, and counsel. The Holy Spirit equips God’s followers with gifts and power to live a communal life of worship and a missional expression of our faith.

We Believe: In The Church

The Church is a community of people who believe Jesus Christ is Lord. They gather regularly to worship, pray and encourage one another, practice spiritual disciplines, and celebrate baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The church God’s tool to advance his Kingdom throughout the world, as people together use their time, talents and resources to proclaim the good news of forgiveness, restoration, grace and love to everyone they meet.

We Believe: In Salvation

Humanity is created to be in relationship with God. We defied God, choosing to go our independent way. The consequence of this rebellion is alienation from God and the corruption of human nature. There is nothing we can do to overcome this separation and corruption. Salvation is God’s gift to us. Through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection God overcame sin and death so we can live in eternal fellowship with God and learn to live as God intends.

We Believe: In Life Everlasting

Jesus will return as a judge to right all injustice and restore all things to God’s original intent. God will restore shalom to the world and reign forever so that our relationships with God, others, creation, and ourselves will be whole and all will flourish. This is what we long for. This is what we hope for.

AS A MATTER OF PRACTICE...

  • In essential beliefs—we have unity (Eph. 34:3-6)
  • In nonessential beliefs—we have liberty (Rom. 14:1, 4, 12 &22)
  • In all our beliefs—we show clarity (1 Cor. 13:2)

OUR PILLARS

To keep us centered on whom we are and what we do, we developed five core values as a church that make us unique. These core values hold up and support our mission at Sunrise. Therefore we call these values “Our Pillars.”

WE WILL BE BIBLICAL
Incorporating Scripture into every area of our lives

Scripture is God’s living words. It is alive and active, shaping our paths in the world. It guides us to proper relationship with our Creator. We believe it speaks into every aspect of life: work, ministry, teaching, play, thinking, conversation, relationship, our giving, etc. Our life is governed by God’s word so that we can live in an intimate relationship with God.

WE WILL BE EVANGELISTIC
Sharing God’s message of grace through word and deed

Jesus announced to the world that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He explained that the way to reconciliation with God comes through trusting and following Him. Jesus met people wherever they were at and spoke this truth in both word and deed. We are called to do the same. We will meet people where they are at and share Jesus’ message of being the Way, the Truth and the Life. We will share this message in our words but also in our lifestyle and deeds.

WE WILL BE AUTHENTIC
Open to share our lives and journey with each other

God intends for us to live in community marked by intimacy, trust and raw honesty. We were created to be known and to know others. Sin disrupted this community and introduced isolation, shame and fear of being known. We strive to overcome this by living in relationships marked by openness, trust and honesty. We will share our journey and lives openly on Sundays, in groups, and in everyday life, providing care, accountability, and love for one another. We are real people living real lives with a real God.

WE WILL BE COMPASSIONATE
Caring for the needs of the poor and disenfranchised

Jesus modeled a life marked by care and compassion to the forgotten, outcast, poor and oppressed. He explained that the way you treat the least is the way that you treat Him. For us to live in God’s kingdom is to have a heart that is transformed by God’s mercy towards our own brokenness. When our hearts are transformed by God’s grace we in turn will have a heart bent towards loving the least. We will be compassionate, caring for those who are broken and in need.

WE WILL BE THANKFUL
Celebrating God’s grace shown to us

God’s grace is amazing. Grace restores our relationship with our Creator and allows us to live in harmony with the world and each other. God’s grace allows us to find fulfillment and purpose in our life. Our response to His grace is thankfulness. Therefore, we seek creative, passionate, God honoring thanks that transforms our hearts. We will focus our time, effort, energy and excellence in corporate forms of worship to be passionate expressions of thanks and celebration. But it doesn’t stop on Sunday morning. In everything else we do (work, play, relationship, groups, etc) our focus is to bring God glory and praise.
