our story

Sunrise Ministries held its first worship service on October 19, 2003, at the Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville, MI, led by Rev. Dr. Dave Breen. At that time, 35 families were a part of this brand new congregation.

Two years later, in 2004, Pastor Dave had surgery for carcinoid cancer. Seminary student, Tim Breen, took a more active role in serving as a pastor at Sunrise. After he graduated from seminary in 2006, the congregation called on Pastor Tim to be the teaching pastor while Dave stayed on working with spiritual development and community care. Pastor Tim stepped away in 2010, accepting a call to the First Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa. Pastor Dave then again took over the role of teaching pastor. In August of 2011, offices were rented that allowed us to establish a Ministry Center and base for staff office, board meetings, and youth ministry.

On June 1, 2013, Pastor Dave was called to his Heavenly home. Bob Wollam was contracted by Sunrise in September of that year to lead the church through a time of mourning and transition. In February of 2014, Pastor Bob officially accepted the role as lead pastor of Sunrise Ministries, a position he held faithfully until June of 2018 when he felt God leading him to return to his home state of Ohio, bringing his young family back to the place he had grown up. We are thankful beyond measure for Pastor Bob's time with us and the work he has done in God's name here at Sunrise, and we are excited to see what's in store for this next chapter in all our stories.

In May of 2017, Sunrise closed on its first permanent home, when we took ownership of the Friendship Chapel building in Jenison and moved our operations there. Full church activities at our new location began in November 2017. We are so blessed to have made this move after years of utilizing shared rental space, and are grateful to our friends with Friendship Chapel for allowing us to inherit their former home. We could not be more excited about what God has planned for this next chapter of Sunrise Ministries.

From the days of the first services and the early visions to the present time of excitement and change, Sunrise has seen our fair share of challenges and uncertainty, but also an abundance of blessing and hope. And throughout it all, Sunrise has held onto our vision of reaching out to the lost, the lonely, the bruised, and the broken, transforming our families, our community, and our world through God's indescribable grace and unending love.
